Bisaya Prayer Cards Collection: Traditional Filipino Catholic Prayers (Batch 1)

Welcome to our new Bisaya Prayer Cards Collection – a series of beautifully designed prayer cards featuring traditional Catholic prayers in the Cebuano language. These cards are designed to preserve and celebrate the rich spiritual heritage of Bisaya-speaking communities while providing practical prayer resources for daily devotion.

In this first batch, we’re introducing three essential prayer cards: a Morning Prayer for new beginnings, a Healing Prayer for the sick, and a Family Blessing Prayer. Each card features the authentic Bisaya prayer text along with cultural context and usage guidance.

1. Pag-ampo sa Bag-ong Sinugdanan (Prayer for New Beginnings)

Pag-ampo sa Bag-ong Sinugdanan - Bisaya Prayer Card

Prayer Text (Bisaya)

“Langitnong Amahan,

Amen.”

English Translation

“Heavenly Father,

As we begin this new day, we thank you for the gift of life and the opportunity to learn again. Like the rising sun, let our minds shine with the light of wisdom that you have given.

Help us remember the lessons we have learned and open our hearts to new knowledge.

Amen.”

When to Use This Prayer

This prayer is ideal for starting your day, beginning a new week, or embarking on a new chapter in life. In Filipino schools, particularly in Bisaya-speaking regions like Cebu and Bohol, this prayer is often recited during Monday morning assemblies to set a positive tone for the week ahead.

2. Pag-ampo alang sa Masakiton (Prayer for the Sick)

Pag-ampo alang sa Masakiton - Bisaya Prayer Card

Prayer Text (Bisaya)

“Mahigugmaong Mananambal,

Amen.”

English Translation

“Loving Healer,

We lift up to you today [name] who is in need of your gentle touch. You know every cell of their body, every pain they feel, and every fear that troubles their mind.

We pray for complete healing. With your powerful word, drive away the sickness from their body.

Amen.”

Cultural Context & Usage

In Filipino communities, prayers for healing often involve family and community members gathering around the sick person. This prayer is traditionally recited by family members at the bedside of ill loved ones or during community prayer services for the sick. The practice reflects the deeply communal nature of Filipino spirituality, where healing is seen as both a physical and community experience.

3. Pag-ampo alang sa Pamilya (Prayer for Family)

Pag-ampo alang sa Pamilya - Bisaya Prayer Card

Prayer Text (Bisaya)

“Maloloy-ong Ginoo,

Panalangini ang among pamilya karong adlawa. Hatagi kami og gugma nga makapasaylo, kaalam nga makasabut, pailub nga makalahutay, ug pagtuo nga makapalig-on.

Amen.”

English Translation

“Merciful Lord,

Bless our family today. Give us love that forgives, wisdom that understands, patience that endures, and faith that strengthens.

Help us to see the presence of each other as a gift, and our togetherness as a privilege. Even in hardship, let us remain united. Even in disagreements, help us to continue loving one another.

Amen.”

Traditional Use in Filipino Homes

Family is the cornerstone of Filipino society, and this prayer reflects the high value placed on family unity. In traditional Bisaya households, this prayer is often recited during family gatherings, Sunday meals, or special occasions. Many families display this prayer in their homes, often in a dedicated prayer corner or “altar” alongside images of saints and family photos.
