Complete Prayer to Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

O glorious Saint Lorenzo Ruiz,

First saint of the Philippines and martyr of Christ, you who knew how to keep your Catholic faith firm until the shedding of your blood in distant lands, graciously hear our supplications.

You who were a loving father and dedicated worker, show us how to live holy lives in our ordinary daily activities. Help us to be faithful to our duties while keeping God at the center of everything we do.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, protector of workers: obtain for us dignified and honest employment that allows us to support our families with honor and serve God in our daily labors. Protect all overseas Filipino workers and grant them safety in foreign lands.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, model of families: strengthen our homes in Christian love, protect our children from all evil, and help us transmit the Catholic faith from generation to generation. Bless all mixed families and help them find unity in Christ.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, brave martyr: give us the grace to remain faithful to Christ in difficulties, to defend our faith with charity and wisdom, and always seek God’s will. Grant us courage when our faith is challenged or mocked.

Through your intercession, O Holy Lorenzo, we trust to obtain the graces we need to live as true Christians and one day reach eternal glory where you already enjoy God’s presence.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, pray for us!

Amen.

Who Was Saint Lorenzo Ruiz?

Early Life and Family

Lorenzo Ruiz was born around 1594 in Binondo, Manila, during the Spanish colonial period. His father was Chinese, and his mother was Filipino, making him a symbol of the Philippines’ multicultural identity. He married a Filipina named Rosario and had three children with her.

Lorenzo worked as a calligrapher and notary, skills that were highly valued in colonial Manila. He was known for his honesty, hard work, and deep Catholic faith. He actively participated in church activities and was respected in his community.

Journey to Martyrdom

In 1636, falsely accused of a crime, Lorenzo joined a group of Dominican missionaries traveling to Japan to clear his name and evangelize. However, Japan was undergoing severe Christian persecution at the time.

Lorenzo and his companions were captured and subjected to horrific tortures for two years. Despite the pain and suffering, Lorenzo never renounced his faith. His famous words were: “I am a Christian, and I shall die for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him shall I offer.”

Martyrdom and Canonization

On September 28, 1637, Lorenzo was executed in Nagasaki through the brutal method of “tsurushi” (hanging upside down). He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1981 and canonized by the same pope in 1987, becoming the first Filipino saint.
